He founded Gallerie Africaine in the 1980s and used it to move Malawian artists off the street, where fine art had been sold alongside folk carvings, and onto a wall.
Cuthy Mede, born in 1949, is a Malawian painter working in modern, futurist, cubist and pointillist styles on strongly local subjects — Malawian people, historical episodes, biblical readings, and ideas such as Justice and Greed.
He lectured in fine art at Chancellor College in the 1970s and was commissioned to paint a large mural for Lilongwe City Centre. In the 1980s he opened Gallerie Africaine, the first art gallery in Malawi owned by a Malawian artist, and used it to show younger artists whose fine art had until then been sold on the street alongside folk carvings.
