One of the foremost nationalists of the 1950s and 1960s and a leader of the Nyasaland African Congress. He served as Minister of Education and then Foreign Minister — and fled the country in the 1964 Cabinet Crisis.
Murray William Kanyama Chiume, born 22 November 1929, was among the leading nationalists in the struggle for Malawi's independence and one of the leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress.
He served as Minister of Education and then Minister for Foreign Affairs in the first years of independence, and fled the country after the Cabinet Crisis of 1964, when Hastings Banda broke with the ministers who had brought him back to lead the movement. He died on 21 November 2007.
