Captain and record scorer for Malawi, top scorer of the French first division, three golden boots in China, and one half of the pair of sisters who took Malawi to a Women's Africa Cup of Nations final at the first attempt.
Tabitha Chawinga grew up in Rumphi, playing with boys because there was no girls' team, and left for Sweden and then China, where six years brought three league titles, three golden boots and two player-of-the-season awards.
In Europe she became the first Malawian to play in the French top flight, and on loan at Paris Saint-Germain scored nineteen goals in twenty-one league games to finish the 2023–24 season as the division's leading scorer. She moved to Lyon and won back-to-back domestic titles. She captains the Scorchers and is the country's record international scorer.
In August 2026 she and her younger sister Temwa carried Malawi, playing in its first ever Women's Africa Cup of Nations, all the way to the final, scoring between them in the semi-final win over Algeria. Malawi lost the final to Cameroon. It remains the furthest any Malawian national football team has ever gone.
