Zani Muwone took Malawian jazz onto the world stage, but he had already spent the early 1990s using his standing to help end one-party rule.
Wambali Mkandawire, born Greenwood Mkandawire in 1952 in the Congo to Malawian parents from Mlowe village in Rumphi, was a Malawian jazz singer and activist.
His 2002 album Zani Muwone carried Malawian music onto the international stage. He was also instrumental in the fight for multi-party democracy in Malawi in the early 1990s. He died on 31 January 2021 of Covid-19 at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, aged sixty-eight.
