Secretary-general of the Nyasaland African Congress and the movement's clearest economic thinker. He died in a car crash in 1962, two years before the independence he had argued into being.
Dunduzu Chisiza was a Malawian nationalist and economist, secretary-general of the Nyasaland African Congress and among the group of young men who organised the independence campaign and brought Hastings Banda back to lead it.
He was detained in the 1959 emergency alongside Chipembere and Banda. Regarded as the most serious economic thinker the movement produced, he convened the influential 1962 Nyasaland Economic Symposium. He was killed in a car accident in September 1962, aged thirty-two, two years before independence.
