Why they are here
Police took him and his computers in April 2022 after he reported that the government was still paying a businessman it was barred from dealing with. They pressed him to give up his sources. He did not.
Vitus-Gregory Gondwe is a Malawian investigative journalist, editor and media consultant, and a correspondent for the Associated Press.
On 30 March 2022 he published, through the Platform for Investigative Journalism, a report that the government had continued dealing with the businessman Zuneth Sattar, paying K1.3 billion on a contract despite the restrictions in place over corruption allegations. In early April the Malawi Police arrested him in Blantyre and confiscated his equipment, pressing him to disclose the sources of his documents.
