Seventy-one goals in a hundred and seventeen games for Malawi, more than anyone else has managed — and later the coach who took the Flames back to the Africa Cup of Nations after thirty-six years.
Kinnah Phiri played as a striker for Malawi through the late 1970s and 1980s and scored more international goals than any other Malawian, by a distance that has not been approached since. He played club football at home and in South Africa, and his generation of the Flames were a genuine regional force.
He went into coaching and took charge of the national side in 2008. In January 2010 he led Malawi to the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola — the country's first appearance in the tournament since 1984, thirty-six years after its only previous one — and opened with a 3–0 win over Algeria, who would reach the semi-finals and go to the World Cup later that year. It remains the best result in Malawian football history on the men's side.
